Tok Janggut

        
Tok Janggut is a famous Malay warrior in Kelantan during British protectorate. His real name is Haji Mohd Hassan bin Munas. He was born in 1853 at Kampung Saring, Mukim Jeram, Pasir Puteh, Kelantan and died in 25 June 1915. He was named Tok Janggut because of his long beard, almost reaching his chest and in malay it is known as a janggut.Following his father served as commander of the castle, he was brought up in the palace of the Emperor Seri Tengku rapids. For your information, Tok Janggut was received his early education in Mecca.He studied theology in Mecca. and was a master of Silat. Silat is one of the marital art in Malaysia.

When he was 52 years old and still in Mecca, Kingdom of Siam dominated his state After the Bangkok Treaty of 1909, Britain took over the administration of Kelantan from Siam on 29 April 1915. The privilege of levying taxes was transferred from the traditional chiefs to the British. This served as the main cause of the rebellion by Tok Janggut and his followers towards british. Tok Janggut was influenced by the message of jihad spirit during the Ottoman Empire in the early 20th century, which advocated the fight against British protectorate. A Jihad is meant a holy war which Islam allows Muslims to fight against those who reject its teachings.
